Erich von Däniken wrote over 40 books and the authored the international bestseller Chariots of the Gods. Von Däniken was a key figure in popularizing "paleocontact," the theory that ancient civilizations were contacted by extraterrestrials. A majority of the scientific community disputed his ideas as pseudohistory. He was also a co-founder of the Archaeology Astronautics and SETI Research Association .
At AlienCon in 2023, Von Dänike claimed that the Pope sent him a parchment celebrating his life's work on his 85th birthday.
