Lieutenant Colonel

Lieutenant colonel attests that what has become known as the "Phoenix Lights" was really him and his squadron launching leftover flares from their A-10s.

According to Lt. Col. Ed Jones, one of the pilots of four A-10s who was part of Operation Snowbird, he reminded his squadron of the Maryland Air National Guard to eject leftover flares since it was the last night of maneuvers. It was more cost-effective to do this than to try and store them. Later, he was shocked to learn that this decision to drop the flares on March 13, 1997 had created such a sensation. His account of the events remained the same over many years.
